• How to maintain your crane to the recommended standard

The need for training?

Small hydraulic cranes are essential in many industries involving the transfer of bulk materials and medium to heavy goods. Their mobility and adaption to operate at sea and the dockside make them even more versatile. But even experienced crane operators can find themselves in potentially dangerous situations. Serious accidents can and do occur without proper training.

Training is a legal requirement. The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) require employers to provide adequate training and to ensure that small hydraulic cranes are operated only by employees who have received appropriate training in their safe use. If you are self-employed, the regulations still apply.

Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS)
Anyone wanting to operate lorry cranes on a Major Contractors Plant site must hold a CPCS card. A Certificate in Specialised Plant and Machinery Operations is a mandatory requirement for a red 'trained operator' CPCS card, and to the NVQ in Specialised Plant and Machinery Operations; email for details.
